How Do Chickens Reproduce? Shortcuts That Work or Fail

Chickens reproduce sexually when a rooster transfers sperm to a hen and one sperm fertilizes her newly ovulated yolk in the infundibulum, before the egg white and shell form. The hen can lay an egg without mating, but that unfertilized egg cannot become a chick; a fertile egg still needs successful incubation for approximately 21 days. University of Kentucky’s male-reproduction guide defines flock fertility as the percentage of eggs that are fertile and hatchability as the percentage that hatch. Egg laying, fertility and hatching have different failure points. A rooster affects the second. Incubation controls much of the third.

What happens inside a hen when she lays an egg?

A hen’s ovary releases a mature ovum, the yolk, whether sperm is available or absent. University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension reports that only the left ovary and oviduct are normally functional. The muscular infundibulum receives the yolk and holds it for 15 to 17 minutes. This is the narrow window in which sperm can fertilize it.

Dr. Jacquie Jacob, the University of Kentucky author of the Extension guide, puts the location plainly: “Fertilization, if it is going to occur, takes place in the infundibulum.” Fertilization therefore occurs before the familiar egg is assembled around the yolk, rather than through the shell after laying.

The Kentucky guide times the rest of the route. The yolk spends about 3 hours in the magnum while thick albumen is added, 75 minutes in the isthmus while the two shell membranes form, and 20 or more hours in the shell gland while the calcium-rich shell is deposited. The whole egg takes about 25 to 26 hours to form and be laid.

Remove the rooster and this assembly line continues. Penn State Extension says commercial table-egg farms generally keep hens without roosters because mating is unnecessary when the goal is food rather than incubation.

Where do mating, sperm storage, fertilization and hatching fit in sequence?

The chicken reproduction process follows this biological order:

  1. During copulation, the rooster deposits semen in the hen’s vaginal area. University of Kentucky identifies papillae on the rooster’s cloacal wall as his mating organs; the University of Maine bulletin reports that a normal mating deposits several million sperm cells.
  2. Sperm move into storage glands near the junction of the hen’s vagina and shell gland. Kentucky gives a typical viable period of 10 days to 2 weeks. Maine reports the same 10-to-14-day average but says fertility can persist for as long as 3 weeks.
  3. The ovary releases a yolk. Stored sperm travel upward, and fertilization can occur in the infundibulum before albumen surrounds the yolk.
  4. The hen adds albumen, membranes, shell and cuticle, then lays the completed egg roughly 25 to 26 hours after ovulation.
  5. Development proceeds only under sustained warmth. Maine Extension says embryonic development can begin around 68°F to 70°F, while cooler hatching-egg storage delays it.
  6. Under controlled incubation, a chicken embryo normally hatches around day 21. The count begins when full incubation begins, rather than on the date the egg was laid.

Daily mating is unnecessary for every fertile egg. Sperm can be stored, a mating may miss the next ovum, and a fertilized embryo may die later.

How is an unfertilized table egg different from a fertile egg?

Penn State and USDA separate embryo potential from food value. A fresh fertile egg is still an egg that can be cooked and eaten; USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says fertile and infertile eggs have no nutritional difference. The decisive difference is the presence of male genetic material and the capacity for embryonic development.

Shell color, yolk color and the presence of a rooster in the yard do not diagnose fertility. Penn State’s comparison requires cracking the egg to inspect the germinal disc. Mississippi State Extension recommends candling only after 4 to 7 days of incubation, when a living embryo and branching vessels may become visible. A clear candled egg can also represent very early embryonic death, so “clear” and “never fertilized” are not perfect synonyms.

Why do a rooster and a 21-day calendar fail to guarantee a chick?

“Rooster present” is an observation; fertility is a measured rate. Penn State warns that keeping a male with laying hens does not guarantee fertility or hatchability. University of Kentucky adds that fertility declines as both sexes age: older hens retain sperm for less time, while older roosters tend to show lower sperm quality and mating activity.

Commercial targets show how the losses compound. Cobb Genetics’ 2026 Cobb500 Fast Feather Management Supplement describes the top 25% of its flocks worldwide. At 34 weeks of age, its table gives 96.7% weekly fertility, 93.1% hatch of fertile eggs and 90.0% hatchability across all eggs. Even this defined, high-performing breeder population does not score 100%.

Those three Cobb figures should not be treated as a backyard promise. They show the arithmetic: some eggs are never fertilized, and some fertile eggs fail during development. Nutrition, breeder age, shell defects, storage, temperature, humidity, turning, ventilation and contamination occupy different points along that chain, according to the Cobb, Maine and Mississippi guidance.

The calendar has a smaller job. Maine Extension lists approximately 21 days for chickens and says genetics and incubation temperature can shift timing. For a Rhode Island Red, one of the breeds named in that bulletin, use the 21-day chicken schedule and count from setting. The calendar cannot repair an infertile egg or an embryo lost before hatch.

How should collected eggs be handled before deciding to incubate them?

The table-egg shortcut and the hatching-egg shortcut point to different temperatures. USDA tells consumers to refrigerate food eggs promptly at 40°F or below. University of Maine recommends holding hatching eggs at 50°F to 60°F and about 75% relative humidity, while Mississippi State warns that storage below 40°F reduces hatchability. No single storage choice optimizes both goals.

Make the decision at collection whenever possible. Reserve only clean, uncracked, normally shaped eggs as hatching candidates, and date each one in pencil. Mississippi State advises against washing hatching eggs because washing can remove the shell’s protective cuticle or draw bacteria through its pores. Refrigerate eggs intended for the kitchen and keep them on the food path.

For eggs still under consideration for hatching, both Extension guides favor incubation within 7 to 10 days. Store them large end up, which is the same orientation as small end down. Maine says to turn stored eggs daily after seven days; Mississippi State starts daily turning when storage passes 3 or 4 days. Beginning on day four is the conservative overlap between the two instructions.

Before setting, Mississippi State recommends warming stored eggs slowly so condensation does not form on the shell. Do not rely on a flashlight test at this stage. Candling gains diagnostic value after incubation has produced visible blood vessels, usually between days 4 and 7.

What conditions must be controlled for fertile eggs to hatch?

A forced-air incubator needs measured temperature, humidity, turning and ventilation; the owner’s manual takes priority because sensor position and airflow vary by model. The two Extension guides differ slightly, and the difference deserves daylight rather than a blended number.

Three evenly spaced hand turns per day meet both recommendations. Maine and Mississippi agree that turning stops for the final three days as the chick moves into hatching position. Both call for higher humidity then, although their percentages differ. Follow the incubator manufacturer’s target and verify it with a hygrometer, as Mississippi State directs.

A practical set proceeds in this order:

  1. Clean the incubator, place it away from sun and drafts, then run it empty for 48 hours; Maine Extension recommends this trial before eggs go in.
  2. Set dated eggs with the large end higher and stabilize the readings at the manufacturer’s temperature and humidity targets.
  3. Turn by hand three times daily through day 18, or confirm that the automatic turner actually moves every tray.
  4. Candle between days 4 and 7. Mississippi State says a live embryo resembles a dark center with branching, spider-like vessels; a blood ring indicates an embryo that died.
  5. On day 18, stop turning, raise humidity to the chosen source or manufacturer target, and maintain ventilation.
  6. Let chicks hatch and dry before transfer to a prepared brooder. Maine Extension cautions that late chicks may lack vigor and advises resisting routine assistance from the shell.

How does flock management change when breeding replaces egg collecting?

A breeder flock adds parent condition, mating success, egg selection, incubation records and a destination for every chick. University of Maine recommends sourcing birds from a National Poultry Improvement Plan-registered hatchery and using a breeder ration rather than fattening feeds. Mississippi State calls for clean nesting material and rejects dirty, cracked, thin-shelled or misshapen eggs.

Record results by hatch, using the terms in the Cobb performance table: fertility equals fertile eggs divided by eggs examined; hatch of fertile equals chicks hatched divided by fertile eggs. A falling first number points back toward mating, age or breeder condition. A falling second number directs attention toward egg quality, storage and incubation.

Time changes the flock. Kentucky documents declining fertility in older hens and roosters. Maine advises waiting two weeks before saving pedigree eggs after changing males because sperm from the former rooster may remain viable. Breeding turns a daily basket into a record of parentage, fertility and embryo survival. Without those separate scores, the rooster receives credit and blame for events that happened days later inside a machine.
